| Description: |
Attributed
to Leochares. From the Knidian sanctuary of Demeter. London, British
Museum. H. 1.47m (whole statue). The serene face of Demeter, mother-goddess
of the crops and fields, turns slightly to the right. She looks calm
and placid, a slight smile on her lips. Her hair is centrally parted
and braided, falling over her shoulders beneath her veil which she
has drawn over her head. |

c. 350 B.C. |
| Discussion: |
If Leochares
is indeed the sculptor of this cult statue, then it is suggested that
he undertook the work whilst also engaged on the west side of the
Mausoleum at Halikarnassos. See Robertson 1981: 161, fig. 218; Stewart
1990: 191, 284; 561-2 (ills.). |
