| Description: |
Figure
'D' from the east pediment of the Parthenon. London, British Museum.
H. 1.21m. Youthful Dionysus reclining on an animal-skin (lion or panther)
and a cloak, facing Helios' rising chariot. He faces away from Artemis,
who runs to spread the news of Athena's birth to the other major divinities.
Dionysus' pose is casual; he leans on his left arm, supporting his
upper torso, and raises his other hand, which perhaps originally held
a cup. His legs are raised and slightly bent at the knee, the right
originally crossing the left at the ankle. |
