| Name: |
'Giustiniani'
Stele |
| Picture: |
 |
| Description: |
Berlin,
Staatliche Museum. H. 1.5m. Palmette on top of long, rectangular stele.
A young girl, dressed in chiton and himation, her hair bound with
fillets, bows her head as she looks through a pyxis (jewellery box).
At her feet, a second pyxis. |
| Date: |
c. 450 B.C. |
| Discussion: |
Typical
funerary stele of the period, featuring a lone figure pondering on
what is to come in Hades, or on what they have left behind. This girl
died unmarried, but she still shows an interest in her jewellery-box,
as do other, married, ladies on later steles (see, for example, Item
# 39). |
