In 2007 she organised the War, Journalism and History conference,
when, over the three day's of events, war correspondents, academics and the public came together to examine and debate historical and contemporary aspects of war corresponding.
She has received grants and awards from a variety of institutions,
The British Academy, Knowledge Transfer, The Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland, Edinburgh University Alumini Award and in 2008 she was awarded the Alice Fisher History Scholarship from the University of Pennsylvania to assist with her research into shell-shock in women.
In the same year, she was appointed as the
Official Historian to the British Army Nursing Service. She has
been commissioned to write a four volume history of the army nursing
service from 1900 up to the current conflicts.
In 2009 she was awarded the Gloeckner Fellowship from Drexel
University College of Medicine's Legacy Centre, Philadelphia. As a result of the Fellowship, Yvonne is now working in collaboration with the College of Medicine and its Institute for Women's Health and Leadership on the Vision 2020 project, where she has been appointed as Visiting Professor of Women in Warfare.
Research Interests
Interests in the history of health, medicine and nursing in the Two
World Wars. She is also interested in veterans' health and welfare issues.
Her earlier research and published work focused on Ireland in the Two World Wars and she compiled a Roll of Honour of 9,100 Irish men and women who served and died in World War Two. Her main research interest is the politicising of mental health issues in warfare, and morale and endurance. She is also keenly intersted in the history of war corresponding.
