Postgraduate
Study - Applying for postgraduate study
In our applicants,
we are looking for potential to excel. With
your application you will be asked for details
of your qualifications, two academic references,
and (for a research degree) a research
proposal. Decisions on admission are
based on all three of these.
Your qualifications
should include a good, recent first degree.
In Britain this is often a good 2:1 or better,
or in North America a GPA of 3.4 out of
4 or better. Applicants with degrees in
subjects other than history are usually
well advised to acquire a historical background
before applying, but there is no necessity
for the first degree to be in Scottish history
specifically. Appropriate research training
is provided.
Referees
Your referees should be able to comment on
your ability to study independently at a high
intellectual level. For a research degree it
often helps if they can comment on your experience
in the specific field of study that you are proposing
to enter.
Applicants for the MSc by Research,
MPhil or PhD should include a research
proposal. Please discuss this with us
in advance. If you are interested in research
on a particular topic, please contact one
of the members of staff
whose research interests are close to
yours. All are willing to discuss proposals
for research, and their individual web pages
provide information on their past and current
postgraduates.
