RAE2008 Results for History
and Classics
The number of History staff at Edinburgh ranked
world-leading or internationally excellent in RAE2008 was the highest
of any university in Scotland and the third highest in the UK, an achievement
exceeded only by Oxford and Cambridge. The panel reported that in
Research Environment,"the majority of the activity was outstanding,
the rest excellent". Esteem Indicators "were found overall
to be outstanding", giving a joint overall score of 4* (or world
leading) in these categories.
Sixty percent of the 60.98 full time equivalent staff included in the
assessment were awarded the top 4* and 3* grades. This equates to 36.6
full time equivalent staff members.
A further 8.1 full time equivalent staff within the School of History,
Classics and Archaeology were also ranked world-leading or internationally
excellent by the Classics RAE Panel.
Thus, collectively, History and Classics at Edinburgh have the third highest
numbers of 4* and 3* staff within these disciplines in the UK.
