13th Annual Conference of the British Association for Biological Anthropology and Osteoarchaeology (BABAO) 2011 (2-4 September)

The University of Edinburgh is host to the 13th Annual British Association for for Biological Anthropology and Ostearchaeology (BABAO) Conference from the 2nd to the 4th of September 2011. This year's sessions include Palaeopathology, Human Evolution/Primatology, Forensic Anthropology and an Open Session.

Hitler's Scandinavian Legacy (8-10 April 2010)

The four Scandinavian countries of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland experienced the effects of the German invasion in April 1940 in very different ways.

Performing Colonial Modernity (18 and 19 May 2010)

This two-day conference seeks to develop a trans-disciplinary research network for postgraduates and early-career researchers at the University with interests in the histories and practices of European colonialism. The organisers are casting a wide net. We aim to bring together specialists working within distinct subject- or area-specialisms who are researching the diverse impacts of European colonialism in different global and local contexts. The conference will be held in the William Robertson Building (50 George Square) on 18 and 19 May 2010. Places are limited, so if you are interested in presenting, please submit your proposal as soon as possible.

Postgraduate addresses European conference

Congratulations to  Fares Moussa, second year PhD student in Archaeology. He is  currently a Marie Curie Fellow at  the  École normale supérieure in Paris and this week end will be speaking at final seminar of the programme 'The Social History of the Mediterranean' at the University of Bielefeld.

Head of School invited to give keynote address at British Scholar Conference - USA 2010

Professor Tom Devine is to be the keynote speaker at the Second British Scholar Conference at the University of Texas at Austin in March 2010.  The British Scholar Society was established to promote British Studies in the USA and to publish the new academic journal; British Scholar.  Professor Devine follows Professor Linda Colley of Princeton who gave the keynote address in 2009.

School Office

Scholarly interest in the lived experience of eighteenth-century Scotswomen has undergone a remarkable revival in recent years, most notably amongst a new generation of historians.  This event brings together both emerging and established scholars from diverse historical perspectives, to share new research on women’s roles, responsibilities, expectations and experiences in eighteenth-century Scotland.

Economic & Social History

How should we respond to new technologies, a new history curriculum, more Scottish history in the classroom, and the need for continuing professional development in history teaching? This conference will address some of these issues with educators, academic staff, and local historians offering some ways forward.

Experimental Archaeology Conference, 15th&16th November 2008

The School of History, Classics and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh is pleased to announce a forthcoming conference on Experimental Archaeology. The conference will be held over the weekend of 15th-16th November 2008 and will comprise a day of papers and discussions at the Archaeology building on Saturday followed, on Sunday, by a trip to the Scottish Crannog Centre on Loch Tay where delegates will be able to visit an experimental re-construction of a crannog and take part on various associated activities. Mutiny at the Margins - Savage Attack 30th June - 1st July

In connection with the 'Mutiny at the Margins' project, a conference entitled Savage Attack, will be held on June 30th and July 1st 2008, with the aim of bringing together historians and anthropologists working on tribal insurgency in colonial and contemporary India. On Friday 4th April, at 5.30p.m., there will be a public lecture by Dr Ismail Karamut, Director of the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, will talk on the Recent Excavations in the Harbour of Theodosius (Yenikapi) and the discovery of 27 ancient ships, in Lecture Theatre 270, Old College.

To be followed by a wine reception in F1, F2b, The Old High School, sponsored by Ashgate Books to view 'Encounters of Arts and Crafts Architects in Byzantium', an exhibition based on the The Byzantine Research Fund Archive from the British School at Athens.
