Every year recently China has hosted a major international Forum
in Beijing discussing major issues of political and scholarly
interest. Several disciplines are represented each year and about
300 scholars from about 40 countries attend each Forum, as well
as many local politicians, administrators, and graduate students
from universities in Beijing . This year Emeritus Professor Harry
Dickinson and Richard Lodge Professor Alvin Jackson are presenting
papers at one of the panels. This is the first time two academics
from the same discipline have been invited to the same Forum.
Harry Dickinson has also been asked to give one of the Keynote
Addresses to the whole Forum. Both professors will go on to give
lectures at Peking University , an institution now with a formal
link with the University of Edinburgh . It is hoped that this
visit will lead to more contacts between historians at Peking
and Edinburgh universities. Harry Dickinson has been promoting
British History in China for almost 30 years and on this occasion
he will go on to give lectures in three more universities in China.
