Undergraduate Study

Economic and Social History is often fascinating in its own right, but an understanding of past change also helps us to understand today’s world.

Many present-day institutions and issues can only be understood if we know about their origins and development: our industrial relations system, conflicts between religious groups, the ‘crisis’ in the welfare state, and the globalisation of the world economy and its effects, are four instances of this point.

Economic and Social History Programmes

Within the subject area, you can study for any of the following programmes:

  • Economic History
  • Economic and Social History
  • Social History

Economic History can be taken as a joint degree with Economics or Business Studies and Economic and Social History can be studied jointly with Geography, Politics, Sociology, Social Policy or Environmental Studies.

Degrees are also available in Social and Architectural History, and Social Anthropology with Social History. For details see Undergraduate Programmes.
