Hitler's Scandinavian Legacy & War, Memory and Literature
8-10 April 2010
Playfair Library Hall, Old College

Introduction

On Thursday 8th, 5.15pm there will be a Public Lecture by Professor Richard Overy on ‘Scandinavia and the Second World War.’

On Friday 9th , the main one-day open Conference will be ‘Hitler's Scandinavian Legacy: The wartime and post-war consequences of the German invasion of 9 April 1940.’

On Saturday, 10th, a half-day open Conference, ‘War, Memory, and Literature: Effects of the Second World War on Nordic Culture, 1939–2009’ will conclude the event.

The four Scandinavian countries of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland experienced the effects of the German invasion in April 1940 in very different ways.

Collaboration, resistance, concessions, and co-belligerency were only some of the short term consequences.

Each Scandinavian country’s historiography of  the period has undergone enormous changes in the 70 years since the invasion to an extent which is little appreciated and understood outside the countries involved.

Today, we believe that it will be instructive to review the immediate and long-term influences on each country’s self-image and national identity as viewed today. This is the main purpose of the conference.

The conference has been structured to enable historians from each country and Nordic scholars to review the last 70 years and to share issues of interpretation and commemoration with each other and their European counterparts.

The organisers intend to publish the papers from the conference in order to make available the significant insights and debates that are anticipated.
