- We offer courses in Latin at first, second
and third / fourth levels.
- You do not need to have studied Latin before.
The first year classes cater for the whole range
of previous linguistic attainment, from absolute
beginners to those who already have a fair knowledge
of the language.
- Latin can be your main subject in the single
honours Latin studies degree, or one of two
main subjects in one of our many joint honours
degrees (in combination with, for example, Greek,
or Ancient History, or French, or English Literature).
- Latin can be taken for one or two years as
part of most Humanities degree programmes and
as an ‘outside subject’ in many
other curricula.

Latin 1
|
Since entrants have very different levels
of attainment, the courses in Year 1 cater
for absolute or near beginners (in Latin 1A
and 1B) and for students with a more advanced
knowledge of the language (in Latin 1C and
1D). Successful completion of the work of either
Latin 1A & 1B or Latin 1C & 1D gives
entry to Latin 2nd Year courses and the prospect
of progressing to the 3rd and 4th year honours
courses thereafter. In Years 1 and 2 you can
expect to study such authors as Catullus, Horace,
Virgil, Ovid, Cicero, and various Latin letter-writers.
Latin
1A (in the first Semester) and
Latin 1B (in the second
Semester) offer intensive courses which
aim to enable you to read reasonably straightforward
Latin with the aid of a dictionary by
the end of the year. The well-tried and
recently revised Wheelock’s Latin
coursebook (with its associated web-based
resources) is used, supplemented by our
own materials and tutorial exercises.

and accuracy of comprehension and translation,
and to enhance your reading and appreciation
of some of the major Latin authors.
