We offer courses in Greek at first, second
and third / fourth levels.
You do not need to have studied Greek before.
The first year classes cater for the whole range
of previous linguistic attainment, from absolute
beginners to those who already have a fair knowledge
of the language.
Greek can be your main subject in the single
honours Greek studies degree, or one of two
main subjects in one of our many joint honours
degrees (in combination with, for example, Latin,
or Ancient History, or French, or English Literature).
Greek can be taken for one or two years as
part of almost any Arts degree.
The following outlines the courses that are offered
in Greek, and describes the various ways in which
you can include Greek in your curriculum.
Greek 1
Greek
1 courses are so organised as to bring students
with little or no previous knowledge and those
with SCE or GCE qualifications to the same level
of attainment by the end of the year.
Greek
1A (in the first Semester) and
Greek 1B
(in the second Semester) are intended for those
with little or no previous knowledge of the
language. In Greek 1A, intensive language teaching
makes it possible to proceed rapidly to the
reading of texts representative of three areas
of Greek literature: epic poetry, oratory and
philosophy.
Greek
1C (in the first Semester) and Greek
1D (in the second Semester) are intended
for those students who have SCE or GCE qualifications.
Revision work on grammar and syntax supplements
the major texts which are read. Class work also
includes unseens and/or linguistic exercises,
and an essay in each of the autumn and spring
semesters.
Greek 2
In Greek 2A
(in the first Semester) and Greek 2B
(in the second Semester), language teaching continues
and the texts studied are taken from a variety
of classical Greek authors.
