Study Notes
•It is absolutely vital that you spend
time memorizing forms and vocabulary every day
and that you attend every class. Language learning
is cumulative, each class building on the previous
ones, and you will quickly lose the thread if
you miss class and/or do not keep on top of
the material. This is especially important in
an intensive course.
•There is no avoiding a huge amount of
memorizing in the early stages and so it is
worth taking the time and effort to experiment
with different methods in order to find the
one(s) that work(s) best for you. See, for example,
online
guides to mnemonic systems.
•Experiment with ways of organizing information.
For example, grammar books usually arrange noun/
verb endings vertically in columns. Some people
find this arrangement the easiest to remember
but others find it easier to remember information
arranged horizontally.
•Since Greek uses its own alphabet, any
memorizing techniques that you have used before
may have to be modified somewhat.
•Unlike when learning a modern language,
you will not automatically have a strong oral/aural
component to reinforce memory. You will find
that it helps significantly if you develop the
habit of speaking ancient Greek aloud as much
as possible when you are completing coursework
or memorizing.
•'Little and often' is by far the best
way to learn vocabulary: 5-10 minutes at a time,
several times a day.
•Review by re-reading earlier exercises;
it will help you consolidate grammar and vocabulary,
and it will bolster your confidence.
