Type of Written Exercises for 1A & 1hA

1) 8 Take-home exercises, labelled A-H, which may beTranslation from Greek into English, Translation from English into Greek, Passages for Comprehension with grammar questions, or a combination of these elements.

 

2) 8 Weekly Quizzes in the tutorials on vocabulary and/or grammatical forms.

 

3) For 1hA students only:Students taking Greek 1hA are required to complete a further assignment in addition to the Coursework and Degree Examination. The 1hA assignment will be assessed according to the Honours course model and counts for 10% of the final mark for the course. This assignment is designed to use your developing linguistic knowledge to deepen your understanding of your main degree subject.

 

Each 1hA student should make an appointment a.s.a.p. with the Course Organiser to discuss the details of the assignment and to decide upon a topic which will be tailored to best suit the student's degree programme. Please give some thought to your topic before you come to the meeting.

 

 

Submission of Written Exercises for 1A and 1hA

You should submit your completed take-home exercises to the Classics office by 12.30pm on Mondays in Weeks 4-11.

 

Penalties for work submitted late will always apply unless prior permission was granted or there is evidence of a valid excuse.

 

1A Students: you should include your own name and the name of your tutor on the exercise. You should preserve all marked assessed work and submit it to the Classics Office at the end of the term so that it can be made available to the external examiner if necessary.

1hA Students: you should submit your work together with an Essay Submission Sheet in the normal Honours manner but include your own name and that of your tutor.

 

 

Assessment of Written Exercises for 1A and 1hA

Written Exercises are marked by the tutors and moderated by the Course Organiser.

 

All coursework and examination answers will be assessed according to the University of Edinburgh Extended Common Marking Scheme.

 

Plagiarism is academic misconduct and subject to University policy. Be sure you understand it and be scrupulous in avoiding it.

 

 

Degree Examination Format for 1A and 1hA

 

Question 1 50%

              Three seen passages for translation and questions on grammar

Question 2 40%

              One unseen passage for translation

Question 3 10%

              6 English sentences with one/two words for translation into Greek.

Exam Paper from December 2005

Please remember that the 2005 exam paper is not strictly a parallel past paper. It is based on a different text and assumes knowledge of a somewhat different vocabulary set.
