Courses in Ancient History feature in
curricula for a wide range of Honours degrees,
including single Honours in Ancient History and
several others where the subject is a principal
component.
No study of history at undergraduate level is simply
an exercise in memory-work: the aim of studying
Ancient History at Edinburgh is not merely a compilation
of facts but aims to give you an understanding
and intelligibility, so far as evidence and available
techniques allow, of how the ancient world functioned.
You will augment your understanding of the civilizations
of the ancient Near East, Greece, and Rome with
the close study of textual evidence (epics, poems,
plays, historiography, inscriptions, letters,
etc) and material evidence (sculpture, vase paintings,
wall paintings, archaeology, etc). Knowledge of
ancient languages is not necessary, but can be
an asset (especially at third and fourth levels)
and can be acquired or enhanced with other courses
run by Classics.
