Undergraduate study at the School of History, Classics and Archaeology

At Edinburgh ‘Classics’ is an interdisciplinary programme in which you can study the languages, literatures, art, archaeology, and history of the ancient world: Greece, Egypt and the Empires of Rome and the Near East.

These first world civilizations have exerted an influence on all successive cultures so that the study of antiquity equips us with a better understanding of our own identities within the global community.

Why Study Classics at Edinburgh?

For living as well as for studying, Edinburgh is one of the world’s most vibrant, beautiful, and fascinating cities. It has deserved its reputation as a cultural and academic capital.

As a leading Scottish university, Edinburgh offers a four year Honours Degree in which you will earn an MA. The first two years of your degree programme provides you with flexibility to study up to two outside subjects, should you wish.

Classics at Edinburgh has an enviable international reputation for research in many diverse areas of classical studies. Courses are research-led by dedicated staff at the cutting-edge of their disciplines. These fields include: ancient Greek epic and lyric poetry, Hellenistic history and culture, ancient Persia, gender and sexuality, Late Antiquity, the Roman Republic, slavery, death and commemoration, myth and art, numismatics, epigraphy, philosophy, and reception.

Classics at Edinburgh provides annual opportunities for international study and for field study. In recent years students have had the chance to study in Italy, Greece, USA, South Africa, and France and participate in organized study tours to Greece, Tunisia, Egypt and Iran.
