I was born in Chesterfield in beautiful
Derbyshire in 1963. Thanks to the help
of Edinburgh University’s summer
school and dedicated local teachers who
sacrificed their free periods to offer
ancient Greek and Latin, I studied Classics
as an undergraduate at Leeds University.
I opted to read for my Masters at Ohio
State University, and then studied
modern Greek during my time as an Erasmus
student
at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
I returned to OSU to complete a PhD
on Callimachus’ Hymns and until
2003 I worked as a lecturer in Classics
at
the Universities of Wittenburg, Ohio
Wesleyan
and Kalamazoo College. In August
2003 I returned to the University of
Edinburgh
-- where I began studying Greek and
where I now lecture in Greek.
My main
areas of scholarly interest are Hellenistic
poetry and ancient
literary
theory and I have an ongoing passion
for promoting the study of the
Greek language
in all periods and places.
