My general research areas are Greek
philosophy and literature, with special
emphasis on
Early Greek philosophy and literary papyrology.
So far I have written a monograph and
a number of articles on the Presocratic
philosopher-poet
Empedocles, now to be followed by two
further studies, nearly complete. The
first is
a long essay on the nature of the daimon
in Empedocles, a key but difficult concept
in his philosophy, while the second comprises
some further suggestions for the reconstruction
of the text of the Strasbourg papyrus
of Empedocles.
At the same time, I have
been
working on a first edition of some philosophical
papyri from the Oxyrhinchus collection,
and a translation of Simplicius’ commentary
on Aristotle’s Physics 1.3. Future
projects will be on 1) some aspect of
Epicureanism, the outlines for the moment
being rather
hazy, as well as 2) a study of the place
of Mind/thinking in Early Greek philosophy
from Parmenides to Plato.
