I am a cultural
historian whose interests are focused
largely on the late antique world.
As a cultural historian my research
takes in both literary and material
artefacts from across the Mediterranean
world. (For instance I have published
on both poetry and glassware). Religious
history, specifically late antique
Christianity, has been a particular
interest, including the key themes
of Christianisation, the birth of
hagiography, and the development of
early Christian art. However, broader
themes of cultural and social history
are also of interest.
Currently I am mostly working on a
project about the cultural transformation
of the city of Rome in the Fourth
Century AD. This involves spending
a lot of time in Rome, which is just
how I like it. A related project,
on burial topography from Late Antiquity
to the Early Middle Ages is also in
the pipeline. However, I am also interested
in late antique North Africa, which
is where my next major research project
should take me. I have also been working
on representations of the Bible in
popular culture in Antiquity as well
as co-organising (with Dr Gavin Kelly)
a collaborative project on the 'Two
Romes': Rome and Constantinople.
I would be interested in supervising
postgraduates interested in a broad
range of late antique subjects, as
well as in the general area of Roman
cultural history.
In my spare time apart from spending
as much time as possible in congenial
Mediterranean settings I especially
enjoy music, mountains, reading non-classical
literature, learning non-dead languages,
good food and drink and the beauty
of Edinburgh.
