The MSc by Research in Classics is a one-year
programme. It provides a grounding in the methods
and techniques of investigation while at the
same time allowing students to pursue their
own research with guidance of supervisors who
are experts in the field. All students take
two compulsory training modules which help
them to pursue their own particular interests.
The course is examined through a 30,000-word
dissertation, on a topic agreed through consultation
with the student’s supervisor(s).
PhD in Classics
The PhD is a research degree obtainable
by a thesis of a maximum of 100,000 words,
and requires three years full-time study or
four years part-time study. The first year
of this degree is probationary and satisfactory
work leads to registration as a PhD student.
PhD students are welcome to attend any of the
lectures and seminars held by the Classics
Subject Area. Where possible, a PhD student
is given the chance of teaching undergraduates
on an area related to his/her own special expertise.
